How it is calculated

Per-order fee for each platform comes from the Fee Index for your seller country. The crossover solves: orders × fee-per-order (A) + subscription (A) = orders × fee-per-order (B) + subscription (B). Only Shopify carries a subscription in this comparison, so a marketplace-vs-marketplace crossover is simply whichever per-order fee is lower — it never flips with volume. The result is a fee-only crossover under these assumptions: it does not say either platform “wins” overall.

Worked example (defaults): Canada, price $40, shipping charged $8, base $48. Etsy $5.25 per order (listing $0.20 + 6.5% × $48 = $3.12 + 3% × $48 + $0.25 = $1.69 + regulatory 0.5% × $48 = $0.24). Shopify $1.64 per order (2.8% × $48 + $0.30) + $49/month. Crossover = ceil(49 ÷ (5.25 − 1.64)) = 14 orders/month. eBay Canada at the same inputs is $6.93 per order (13.6% × $48 = $6.53 + $0.40), so its crossover against Shopify is ceil(49 ÷ (6.93 − 1.64)) = 10 orders/month.

Why Amazon is not compared — explicit exclusion

Amazon is not in this tool, deliberately — not an oversight and not a “coming soon” badge. Amazon referral fees vary by category (roughly 8% to 45%) and FBA fees depend on size and weight, which this tool does not collect, and Amazon’s Seller Central schedule is login-gated and could not be verified from an official page. No Amazon numbers are shown rather than guessed ones. See the Fee Index for exactly what is missing.
